I recently bought “The Rails3 Way” book about developing with Ruby on Rails version 3. Its very good, especially the parts about the new ActiveRecord chaining, routing, and ActionMailer.

I highly recommend it for those switching to Rails3.

I used coupon code “GNMLS8O3” for the Cascadian Farms Organic Fiber Bars which saved ~ $2.50, and they automatically come with a $4.00 off savings below the standard price of $16.65.

The Gillette M3 Power razors were a different story. I had to login at:

and refresh until I found the Gillette coupon for $4.00 off (thanks to taf @ FatWallet).

All in all, I think it was a sweet deal, ~ $21 for eight quality razors and 20 tasty organic granola bars! I haven’t tried the granola bars, but I like Cascadian Farm products, so they are worth a shot - plus the reviews were good.

I’m always on the lookout for razor deals and I’m glad I was able to get Mach3 blades as they seem to last longer for me than the Fusion blades.

My Favorite Can Opener

My sister and I were discussing how from time to time, its well worth it to spend a little extra money and get a high quality product instead of going with the cheaper alternative.

This can opener is a perfect example, and I learned about its quality the difficult way:

First I bought a cheap one
It was difficult and unpleasant to use
It fell apart within a few months of use
I had to buy another can opener

When I read that this can opener was user in outer space, I was sold. I think I paid $12 for it, but what a bargain! Years later, the can opener is still cranking away. Its well designed, solid, and easy to maintain. I clean it occasionally because I want to keep it in good working order.

CVS Extra Bucks

Its been awhile since I’ve posted about CVS, but its also that there was a drought of good deals for me from CVS.

I lost my Extra Care Card and signed up for a new one, and I guess I had to start all over.

Lately however, I’ve been getting lots of discounts for CVS brand products: $2.50 off $12.00. Its a decent deal, but now I’ve got enough CVS brand products - so I’m going to hold off for a bit.

Strange though, I’ve filled several prescriptions, and last month I thought they were having double bucks for prescriptions, but I haven’t received even the usual $1 per two prescriptions. Hmmm.

Nikon Coolpix

When I was growing up, my dad had “the coolest” Nikon camera. My sisters and I admired the device with sincere envy!

So of course it goes without saying that the Nikon brand still holds a lot of value to us (at least to me), and I find it so amazing that its possible to buy a Nikon camera for only $99! With free shipping too!

This camera is rated at eight megapixels and is only 2.4” x 3.8” x 1.1”. With digital cameras, size counts - I figure if its smaller than a pack of cigarettes its a good size. (With single lens reflex cameras (SLR), its the lens size that counts, and in that case, I’ve heard its the bigger the better.)

Anyway, back to this little gem - it also has a feature called facial recognition. I wonder what that is for?

Its time I bought a new coffee maker. This one by DeLonghi looks terrific, and at $29.99 with free shipping, its a no-brainer. The coffee maker also gets really good reviews.

My current coffee maker is the free one from Gevalia. Its a good coffee maker - I’ve been using it for several years, but I do want my coffee to be a little hotter, and supposedly the DeLonghi makes very hot coffee.

REVIEW: I bought the black coffee maker above, and while its nice, its far from perfect. The filter arm does not operate easily, and it gets stuck preventing the coffee from draining into the decanter. I’m sure its going to overflow one of these days. The handle is designed so that the heat from the coffee exits right onto my thumb. Ouch!

The one thing they got right on this coffee maker is the drip control. You can easily take out the decanter and there are no drops onto the heating pad.

Its amazing how cheap these devices are becoming:

This 8GB drive is $26 but comes with a $15 rebate, reducing the price to only $11. It comes with free shipping too!

My only wish is that they were smaller. I’d like to run computers off of them (the entire operating system), but I’m afraid that someone might bump into the drive and dislodge it.

The HP t8135 thin client has a spot inside the device where a USB drive can go - very cool!

KitchenAid Artisan Mixers

I love these mixers, I don’t own own one but I want one. My husband and I registered for one for our wedding but in the end switched it for the KitchenAid 11 cup Professional food processor. I like it but it was my husbands choice. I think the mixer is more of a baker’s tool and the food processor is more of a cook’s tool. You where I am going with this now… he cooks, I bake.
We do use the processor a lot, and it has been a great product. But I still want the stand mixer.

I happened to stumble upon the KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixers today at amazon for a great price $229… and free shipping. I am so tempted.

Yah, I know its right around the corner! All the more reason to find some last minute deals out there. So far the reports are saying holiday sales are down- so maybe its possible to find some good deals and just make it in before free shipping coupons are done!
Here’s what I’ve found:
dealcatcher.com has some items flagged with details on the particulars, the pre and post sale prices, shipping details and when the deal expires.
slickdeals.net highlights all different sites with a Hot Deal- it is a little random but there are loads of ideas and deals that might help you get direction if you have no ideas.
fatwallet.com which will give you cash back as you shop from their site (don’t forget to create an account!) as well as provide you with deal and shipping info at each store.

For coupon codes:
at retailmenot.com you can search for specific coupons codes you might need
couponcode.com has a bunch of coupon code to to major retailers
google.com- yes that’s right, google it. Your shopping at LLBean and your wondering if there is a coupon for free shipping and they will hopefully put you to a site that contains a current code. And always check for even the little online boutiques - its always possible a blog is running a promotion with a small site and offering a deal with a code supplied on their site.

Another way to get a leg up on deals is being on email lists of you favorite retailers. Okay- it is annoying at times when you get 100’s of messages, but they send coupon codes and free shipping deals right to you. You might just have to do a lot of deleting if your done with your shopping and they keep on rolling in!

Here’s a nice gift idea for that baker on your holiday shopping list. This is a Panasonic SD-YD250 Automatic Bread Maker with YeastPro yeast dispenser and can, obviously, be used to make bread at home.

It costs $114.99 and is available with free shipping today. I like electronic cooking appliances like this, and even though I like bread, I don’t eat that much of it. My mom has a bread maker, and she used to use it often, but now she mostly makes mostly banana, cranberry, and pumpkin bread in the oven with regular bread pans.

Online coupons, like rebates, are tricky for retailers and consumer product manufacturers. If they aren’t careful, clever shoppers can go too far and abuse their system fraudulently.

With printed coupons, the limitations are fairly obvious. With online coupons however, the sky is the limit as they say.

Here’s a new addition to our list of good deals on the web:

I just bought a bunch of Brita water filters (the kind that go on my sink faucet) and I think I paid only about eight or nine dollars a piece, which is cheaper than the price I got from Bed, Bath and Beyond, which is really impressive!

Since that was my first purchase, I’m still unfamiliar with what products they have the best price on, but since they have a loyalty program not unlike the CVS ExtraCare program, I’m sure I’ll be back there shopping again soon.
